Dolores Section Foreman's House

The
Section Foreman's House from Dolores, Colorado, is a versatile and
popular structure. The building was located just behind the RGS’s
original section house, and was purchased by the railroad in the 1940s
to replace their aging structure. The house is typical of many
throughout the United States at the time, as it was one of many that
could be ordered through a catalog from Sears, Roebuck &
Company. The “kits” were generally delivered by boxcar, another
interesting aspect and possibility for the model railroader. It
was not uncommon to see a row of three or four of the house, as was the
case in Dolores.
Because
I was unable to locate any good photos of the prototype, I relied
heavily on Mike Blazek’s great drawings. At the time Mike did the
drawings, he had access to a photo, but that was many years ago and the
photo is long gone. I've designed the kit so it can be assembled
as either the RGS’s Section House or the more typical mail-order
house. Adding the rear porch/addition is optional, giving you
more freedom to individualize the houses.

The above two
photos show the kit assembled as the typical mail-order house.
The kit includes the clothesline poles, outhouse, and picnic table.

The above two photos illustrate the
kit constructed as the RGS prototype. Note, the rear
porch/addition has been added, and it features the RGS's distinctive
front stairs and railing.
As with all our
kits, extensive slot and tab construction is featured. Cast metal
chimneys made exclusively for this kit are included, as well as our
popular 3-tab, peel-and-stick shingles. The rear screen door is
also included. Ribbed metal roofing is included for the front
porch, as well as corrugated metal roofing for the optional rear
porch/addition. The 31 page, spiral bound instruction manual
includes 32 photos of the assembly process.
