DURANGO DEPOT

The Durango Depot, Durango, Colorado, has been serving the narrow gauge since 1882.  To say the structure was frequently modified by the railroad would be a gross understatement.   Siding, door and window locations, sign placement, paint schemes, roof details, types of roofing, and even the number of chimneys varied over time.   Because of the large number of changes that took place, I elected to model the structure as close as possible to represent the late 1930's/early 1940's.  Modelers wanting to depict different time frames can modify the kit to suit their needs.

O-Scale, West and South Elevations, Featuring The Prototype's "Diamond" Shingle Pattern

DUD-HO Main

HO-Scale, West and North Elevations, "Shake Shingle" Roofing Included

Neither the HO-scale model nor the O-scale model is a scaled down version of the prototype.  The HO model has a footprint of 4¾ x 22-inches (12 x 56 cm), not including the platform, and the full platform measures 6 x 23-inches (15 x 58 cm).  The O-scale model measures 8¾ x 40-inches (22 x 102 cm), and extends to 10¾ x 42-inches (27 x 107 cm) with the platform.  Simply put, they're LARGE models!

DUD EAST

HO-Scale, East and South Elevations

As with all our kits, extensive slot and tab construction is featured.  Four cast metal chimneys were made exclusively for each kit.   As always, the door knobs and lock plates are included.  Well illustrated, spiral bound instruction manuals are included with recommended tools, adhesives, and finishing techniques.

DUD BAY

HO-Scale Bay Window

The prototype features a bay window on the trackside.  The model's bay window is comprised of 54 individual pieces (not including the shake shingles!), most of which are peel-and-stick.

General Construction Photo

Construction of the kit employs the same techniques as our other depots: a well-braced plywood interior substructure is first assembled using slot and tab joinery, which is then covered with the peel-and-stick outer siding of wainscoting and clapboard.  All windows and doors are peel-and-stick plywood, with additional trim pieces applied to represent the prototype's unique woodwork.   In all, there are 56 windows and doors!!  The HO model includes 11 sheets and the O-scale includes 9 full sheets of our own textured paper, peel-and-stick shake shingles.  The adhesives we use on the peel-and-stick materials are industrial products, well suited to the application.
