OURAY DEPOT
FROM
OURAY, COLORADO

The Ouray Depot was constructed by the
D&RG in August, 1888, and stood until May 20th, 1948, when the
spring snow melt caused an electric transmission pole to lean into the
railroad’s telegraph line. The resulting short circuit caused
fires in the Ridgway Depot and roundhouse, and the Ouray Depot.
The Ridgway fires were quickly contained, but the unoccupied Ouray
Depot was totally destroyed.
Construction of the laser-cut kit
follows our typical design: a
plywood inner core is first assembled making extensive use of
slot-and-tab construction. The peel-and-stick wainscoting is
applied, followed by aged clapboard siding.
The windows are made from several layers of plywood, again
peel-and-stick, and can be mounted in an open position. Textured
shake shingles (peel-and-stick, of course!) are used for both the
second story walls and the roof. All parts come unpainted, but
instructions for applying the various finishes are included in the
spiral bound instruction manual. In fact, the manual
describes every step of the construction. The kit includes extra
parts to allow the model to be built to reflect the prototype during
different eras.
The Freight doors can be mounted either
open or closed, and extra parts
are included to allow the model to be constructed to represent
different periods of the structure's life.
The kit includes laser-cut trim, decals
for different lettering
schemes, a prototypic chimney casting made just for this kit, and even
the door knobs and lock
plates. The footprint of the completed S-scale model, including
the
freight platform measures 9 x 17½-inches (23 x 45-cm). The
footprint of the O-scale model is 11 x 22-inches (28 x 56-cm).

We've also assembled optional Depot
Detail Sets for our depot kits. The O-scale set contains 54
detail
parts and the S-scale set contains 79 parts. The collections come
from a number of manufacturers including ourselves, Berkshire Valley,
Selley, Grandt Line, Tichy Trains, Wiseman Models, and Design
Tech.
Included are crates, barrels, waiting benches, a ladder, baggage wagon,
a beautiful Fairbanks-Morse scale, tools, luggage, and more (see the
Depot Detail Set webpage for a complete listing DepotDetailSetsidepage.html).
Here's a few pictures to show how the details help bring the structure
to life:
